On the drive over to the park, I told her I used to look for shelf fungus on hikes, so I could carve my name on the soft side.

A sewing project, independently undertaken and completed, perhaps as a way to avoid helping with the laundry. The monster was sewn onto a dryer sheet (??), which was then sewn onto the notebook paper. For better visibility.

Twinsies with one of my students today- "Yahoo Pardner!" and "Take my picture" is what she said about it.

Pizza and hot dogs at the Loading Zone after their friends' dance performance at the Calumet Theater. Side note: Calumet almost became the capital of Michigan at the height of the mining era.

When you're 8, sometimes at the end of the week at the end of May, you need a bribe to get out of bed and go to school.

Look at these readers, leading their own book club. I love this time of year. They're so capable and independent.

Project 52, 19/52
"Up"
This week's Project 52 theme was "up."
Way "up" here, in the "Up"per peninsula, you never know when it might snow. Here it is, coming down hard on the 51st day of spring, the day before Mother's Day. It was beautiful, but thankfully, short-lived and already melted a few hours later.

Indoor recess- "Adventure to Fitness." This guy on-line takes them on an adventure, makes them move a lot, and teaches them some science and history. And they love it!

Project 52, 18/52
"Texture"
This week's theme was "texture." As in, crumbly dense chocolate truffle cake, smooth creamy homemade whipped topping, juicy strawberries, and some chalky wintergreen berries Addie picked and thought would go well with this dish. Happy Birthday to me!Project 52, 17/52
"Time"
OK I am a week late here- my laptop battery died and the new one seemed to take a long time to arrive.
But anyways, last Sunday was a lovely lazy day. No afternoon plans, so we took the time to enjoy the spring weather. Picnic on the waterfront, followed by sidewalk chalking and some scootering. Despite the lingering snow, it seemed like spring. Never mind that later that week, we got several new inches of snow.
05.02.13
Math fact practice- the unfunnest part of homework. The watermelon manicure doesn't help as much as you'd think.
04.30.13
Ranger Val at the library again, teaching about the birds and the bees. Pollination. The dogwood has a trebuchet. It turns out you can make one with popsicle sticks and rubberbands.
