Project 52, 9/52

Moody
The largest, the highest, and the deepest of all the Great Lakes. The most beautiful, if you ask me. Usually too cold to swim in, even in August (unless you're from here.)

This is the lovely southern shore of Lake Superior on a sunny Saturday in March- rugged, picturesque, and extremely temperamental. Moody, if you will. Last July, this beach was an azure sheet of glass.  Last November, the waves pounded.  Think waves of up to 30 feet.  Think "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."   Today, the waves were just 2 to 4 feet. But I wouldn't want to be out there!

  3. To hear Lake Superior make music, go out on a windless day in late spring and listen while the sun breaks up the smaller ice crystals. You'll never forget it! (You need to find a day when the ice has been honeycombed and the pieces start breaking off -- you'll hear every tone on the scale!)
